Returning from a trip to North Africa, Delacroix painted the interior of a harem where three Algerian women and their servant were gathered around a kanoun (small brazier) and a hookah.
In a setting of earthenware and carpets, the artist shimmers with fine fabric shirts, satin serouels, jackets and embroidered slippers, bracelets around the ankles. These women embody a refined art of living for which Delacroix felt the respect of the historian and the admiration of the colorist painter.

Upon his return from a trip to North Africa, Delacroix painted the interior of a harem featuring three women from Algiers and their servant gathered around a kanoun (small brazier) and a hookah pipe.
The artist depicted the shine of loose, billowing blouses, satin sirwals, ankle bracelets, embroidered jackets and babouche slippers, against a lavish backdrop of faience and carpets. These women represent a sophisticated art of living for which Delacroix showed respect as a historian and admiration as a colourist.
